Bob’s Garden

The morning was heating up too quickly, going from warm to sweltering before it’s time. I could feel my hair beginning to clump into limp strands on my neck. But the oppressive summer sun was soon forgotten, replaced with thoughts of “How beautiful! How wonderful!”

Today I was visiting Bob’s beautiful residential garden.   Many people have beautiful gardens, but few have so artfully combined their vegetable and flower beds as Bob has.  I saw an early summer harvest was that ready for picking, but the vegetables didn’t hold my eye for long. They were easily overshadowed by the exuberant display of colorful zinnias. Zinnias of every color were everywhere. They lined the fences, they filled the beds between crops, and they swayed up against the back of the tool shed. They gracefully connected this garden with the borrowed landscape of the field behind. This was definitely their season and my eyes drank in their fresh color.

Bob’s vegetable/flower garden combination provides a feast for the table as well as the eyes.  And it’s not just a feast for people; the bees were sharing the flowers with buoyant butterflies who flitted about, alighting only long enough for a sip here and a sip there. A mockingbird kept singing from high up on his corner post, and several hummingbirds darted in amongst the flowers. I was honored to witness this enchanting scene.

But even though is looks enchanted, this garden is not a fairytale. It didn’t happen all by itself  without hard work and vision. It has the same struggle for life found everywhere.  With closer study you will discover life-sucking pests hidden in dark crevices and smothering stalks under the cover of leafy greens. And then there’s the battle with the merciless Texas summer consisting of too much sun and too little water.

Bob’s strategy is brilliantly simple and effective. He works with the course of nature on this, enjoying the garden to the max while he can, then, when the water bills too high and there’s no rain for months, he just relaxes and lets go. The beautiful flowers turn crusty brown, dry out and drop their seed on the earth, unwittingly re-seeding for next year’s glorious show.

The heart of a gardener understands the seasons in life and keeps it’s peace. Thank you, Bob, for sharing your garden with us.

Old Town

I recently visited “Old Town,” the historic center of Alexandria, a city older than the United States. I can’t wait to go back with more free time to explore the many sights and sounds of the area along the Potomac River.
